The following themes are to get you thinking about higher-order ideas and open-ended solutions. While I would certainly want you to use elements and principles of design, good techniques and attention to workmanship in what you do for this class, I would also like you to be able to make deeper meaning with your art. What are you expressing? What should it say to others?

Themes often come about by your own experiences and your reactions. Have you traveled somewhere that you either hate or love? Did you just celebrate a holiday and want to express the joy (or sadness) surrounding it. Are you full of teenage angst at the demands of being a teenager? Express it!

Sometimes the idea will structure your response. First decide on what you want to express, then choose the best medium, techniques and style to use to portray the idea.

Concrete - response to a specific prompt - What's in your locker or backpack, Draw your junk drawer
Abstract - Less concrete, more open-ended such as: lesson, dinner, self.
Higher-Level - Demand a deeper response - juxtaposition, layering, interactivity.
Interdisciplinary - pair up with another teacher and use a current lesson as a response
