Have you ever had trouble coming up with original, creative ideas? Everyone has! It’s tough finding something new to do. But it’s time to move beyond just trying to copy an exact replica of what you find on the internet. Pablo Picasso once said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” What you’re looking at, above, is a version by Banksy, the anonymous street artist. Picasso was actually one of the first modern artists to use collage as a medium, to collect inspiration from a variety of sources.

Collage - an art form that combines a variety of materials to create a new composition. Collages can be paper, found-objects, mixed-media, fabric, photo-montage & digital.
Multimedia - using a variety of media (materials, surfaces, objects).
Unity - a principle of art. Unity ties together various elements so that they appear to fit together. Unity can be achieved through repeating elements like colour, shape or texture. It can also be created through composition, eg. having elements in a circle, or all figures looking towards a single spot.

We first talk about Rule of Thirds and composition in the photograph. Then student take their photos and upload them into a google drawing with a canvas size of 8.5 x 11 so that they will perfectly print to paper size. Then I give each student a plastic document sheet from the dollar store. I can get them in a big pack for cheap!. Then they slide their photo into the plastic sleeve and they trace them with a fine point sharpie. Take their photo out and use a light table or window to trace their drawing onto blank paper. This will become the backing of their magazine collage. Then choose a formal colour scheme and tear out a ton of those colours from magazines. Then carefully tear each piece into the shapes they want and glue them onto the pencil traced backing sheet. They can constantly check their proper placement by laying their clear sleeve over top. When they are done, they slide the finished collage into the plastic sheet. I don't glue the plastic together but you could seal the top if necessary. (M. Kaye in High School Art Teachers)
