Introduction

Have you ever had trouble coming up with original, creative ideas? Everyone has! It’s tough finding something new to do. But it’s time to move beyond just trying to copy an exact replica of what you find on the internet.  Pablo Picasso once said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” What you’re looking at, above, is a version by Banksy, the anonymous street artist. Vocabulary

Collage - an art form that combines a variety of materials to create a new composition. Collages can be paper, found-objects, mixed-media, fabric, photo-montage & digital.

Multimedia - using a variety of media (materials, surfaces, objects).

Unity - a principle of art. Unity ties together various elements so that they appear to fit together. Unity can be achieved through repeating elements like colour, shape or texture. It can also be created through composition, eg. having elements in a circle, or all figures looking towards a single spot.

Self-Reflection

Did I meet the Success Criteria? – Self-Check

  • My collage has a clear theme or main idea which is: _____________________
  • I have used 3 or more images or items
  • I have used different materials, including: _____________________________
  • I have included one hand-drawn or painted element
  • All pieces of my collage are securely fastened and neat
  • My work is signed and dated (can be on the front or back)
  • I have unified the different parts of my collage by repeating: colours, shapes, and/or textures
  • I have written & submitted my artist reflection

Artist Reflection (out of 35 pts)

Please neatly hand-write in pen on lined paper OR type on computer (email) in Word or Google Doc (share).

  1. Artist’s Name:  you, of course (1)
  2. Name your Art: be creative! (2)
  3. What is the theme of main idea of your work? Why did you choose this theme? (4)
Poor Answer: A beach. I like beaches.
Good Answer:  My topic is a quiet, deserted beach with a calm ocean. It reminds me of my visit to Israel when the beach was quiet and peaceful
in the early morning. It was a beautiful moment that I wanted to share.
  4. The idea behind “Steal like an Artist” is to find inspiration from many sources, not just copy a single image. Of course, it’s great to use your own, original ideas, too.  Please share what inspired you and how you used the ideas or images in your own work. (1 paragraph) (4)
  5. Plagiarism  is the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as your own. What are 2 steps you can take when creating your own work to avoid plagiarism? Please give details & examples using unit vocabulary. If you would like to review the information shown in class, please refer to http://www.artroom.pbworks.com, under Grade 10 à Artists Steal – Collage. (this page) (2 paragraphs) (8)
  6. A work of art that uses different materials can look chaotic and messy. Unless that was your intention, you can unify the elements of your work by repeating colours, shapes and/or textures. How did you tie together different parts of your multimedia collage to create a unified picture?  (1 paragraph) (4)
  7. Did you have any difficulties when creating your collage? What problems did you solve?  What would you do differently next time?   (1 paragraph) (4)
  8. What is your favourite part of your work? What did you enjoy about the process of collage and multimedia? (1 paragraph) (4)
  9. Imagine that your art is going to be part of a gallery show.
Write a brief statement that could hang on the wall beside your piece. Describe your work, the materials you used, the process and what inspired you, in 3 or 4 sentences. (4)

Another method:

We first talk about Rule of Thirds and composition in the photograph. Then student take their photos and upload them into a google drawing with a canvas size of 8.5 x 11 so that they will perfectly print to paper size. Then I give each student a plastic document sheet from the dollar store. I can get them in a big pack for cheap!. Then they slide their photo into the plastic sleeve and they trace them with a fine point sharpie.
Take their photo out and use a light table or window to trace their drawing onto blank paper. This will become the backing of their magazine collage.
Then choose a formal colour scheme and tear out a ton of those colours from magazines. Then carefully tear each piece into the shapes they want and glue them onto the pencil traced backing sheet.
They can constantly check their proper placement by laying their clear sleeve over top. When they are done, they slide the finished collage into the plastic sheet. I don't glue the plastic together but you could seal the top if necessary. (M. Kaye in High School Art Teachers)
